My message about fake foods has always been clear.
If you don’t recognise a food from a garden or the wild, it’s not natural. If it didn’t grow in the way it appears, it’s not ‘natural’.
But how about milk made from almonds, sausages made from mashed compounds, butter made from nuts?
Fake, fake, fake, and fake.
I’ve just returned from a food manufacturing conference in the US and it’s so alarming what people regard as healthy food that has all been made in a laboratory.
It can be marketed as being sustainable, good for the environment or good for us but it isn’t.
I’m so fine with people choosing certain foods for religious, political, environmental or animal protection but don’t make pretend foods to resemble those we choose to avoid and claim they’re healthy.
If you don’t want to eat chicken, it’s ludicrous to create something that mimics the texture and flavour of chicken but has only ever been manufactured in a laboratory.
We’re moving so dangerously far away from real foods, as nature intended, that it’s a great concern. These are highly processed, over produced foods full of stabilisers, gums and thickeners and so many additives that they’re not helping our health one bit.
If you don’t want to drink milk, that’s fine, but as soon as you make milk from oats or almonds, you’ve processed it and it’s fake milk. It’s also so highly concentrated in Omega 6 fats which is highly inflammatory. These foods aren’t supposed to be consumed without their matrix of other nutrients, particularly fibre, and in such high concentrations.
Many of these food manufacturers extract a key ingredient from a food and forget about everything else that was crucial to the nutrient composition of that food. In its natural form, all the nutrients support each other and work together, not in isolated parts.
Bone marrow is another food where this commonly happens. If you must add tapioca, gelatine and starch to bone broth, it’s not bone broth. Proper bone broth is made by boiling the marrow and infusing it until it becomes a naturally thickened liquid over many hours.
Please be aware of food trends that are commandeered by food manufacturers and turned into a bunch of chemicals that won’t aid your health. Stick with real foods – grass fed livestock raised without needing antibiotics because they’re so sick and cheap grains, fresh or frozen vegetables and pure, full fat dairy, fresh olive oils and nuts in their whole, natural form.
