A new study has found that your gut health isn’t just affected by what you eat, but also when you eat and how stressed you are.
Researchers looked at thousands of people and found that those who were both highly stressed and eating a large portion of their food late at night were much more likely to experience digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, and general gut discomfort.
Interestingly, eating late on its own didn’t seem to cause major problems. It was the combination of stress + late eating that had the biggest negative impact. In fact, people with both habits had significantly higher rates of gut issues compared to those with lower stress and more regular eating patterns.
The study also found that this group had less diverse gut bacteria, which is important because a healthy gut needs a wide variety of good bacteria to function properly.
Why does this happen?
Stress already puts strain on your body and digestion. When you add late-night eating, when your body is naturally winding down, it can further disrupt how your gut works. Together, they create a kind of “double hit” on your digestive system.
What you can take away from this:
- Try to avoid eating large meals late at night, especially if you’re feeling stressed
- Focus on stress management (sleep, movement, relaxation)
- Remember that gut health is influenced by lifestyle habits, not just food choices
While more research is still needed, the message is clear: looking after both your stress levels and your eating habits can go a long way in supporting your gut health.
